Minimal queries that can be submitted to the Gaia archive in the Astronomical Data Query Language to retrieve the data necessary to reproduce the HR diagram in Fig. 6. In this case the query is split into three parts.

Query to retrieve stars with Hipparcos colour indices. This results in a table of 30 009 rows listing the Gaia source identifier, the value of MG based on the Gaia DR1 parallax, the Hipparcos (van Leeuwen 2007) value of (BV), and the value of v.

Query to retrieve stars with Tycho-2 colour indices. This results in a table of 8983 rows listing the Gaia source identifier, the value of MG based on the Gaia DR1 parallax, the Tycho-2 value of (BV) calculated as 0.85(BV)T, and the value of v.
